Teaching Philosophy

Learning music is a wonderful pursuit. From the beginner to the advanced player everyone who is willing to broaden their understanding of music through lessons and classes will undoubtedly make themselves a better musician. That is why I make sure that the environment that I bring my students into is a safe place to learn in. Each student receives a tailored lesson plan to ensure that they can meet the goals that we set together. There is an importance to the way we approach playing the horn and the foundation that we build upon starts with the air. With the air, we can breathe life into each note so we can play beautiful passages and technical lines. The air is so important that I focus on this as a staple to every lesson and make sure we always check in with how we supply the air into the instrument so the student can continue to improve. Just as important as air is the fundamentals that we must practice every day. I help each student work through standard etudes, solos, method books, duets, excerpts, and chamber literature. It is also important to know that the horn has many roles in music and all must be played beautifully while in character. Each piece you play asks you to tell a story and the story you create is what the audience hears when you play. To reach this area we all must be diligent in practicing efficiently and methodically.
